Website Design and Development Processes

Web design and development

If you are planning to have a website for your business or organization, the great start can be understanding the processes that involve in designing and developing a professional website. The idea that you can gain through understanding the processes can be further helpful in finalizing your website setup budget and choosing the right designer/developer for your business website.

Just do it is not the proper approach to get a great website designed and developed for your business. Since a website can be a powerful vehicle to help your business grow further, it should have proper planning and stages of development.

Although each great website is unique, the entire process of a website development project remains the same. Throughout the process, you’re able to view the progress that is made to the website project in real-time. You will also have the opportunity to review the development and suggest for modification.

The timeline of the project depends on the complexity of the website.

In general, there are five phases of a website design and development project. Namely,

  1. Concept
  2. Planning
  3. Implementation
  4. Testing
  5. Launching and phase out

Each phase, generally, consists of some sub-phases or steps. Depending upon the complexity of the project, the steps may take few hours to few days. Likewise, the complete website development project may take few days to few months.

1. Concept Phase

Like everything that is creative and strategic, the concept plays a great role in a website design and development project.

The steps may flow as follow:

  • Quotation request
  • Request review
  • Proposal submission
  • Proposal review
  • Project agreement

Quotation Request: While you are thinking of a website, you must have an idea about how your website will look and function. You will share your idea through a quote request or open tender to have multiple proposals.

Request Review: Professional web development firm will review your request or tender notice to ensure that they have the necessary arrangements and manpower to design and develop a website in accordance to your requirement. Note that not all web development firms can’t be capable to develop all types of websites.

Proposal Submission: The website design/development companies that feel comfortable with your requirement will submit proposals for your consideration.

Proposal Review: You will review the proposals. You will examine details into the website features, timelines, pricing policies, agreement terms, and other details. You need to take care of selecting the best proposal that fits your requirements and budget. The technical details and workflow processes provided in the proposal also matter a lot while choosing a web development firm/freelancer for your project.

Project Agreement: Now that you found the most suitable web developer for your business, you need to come into an agreement that will be abided by both the party.

2. Planning Phase

This is the phase where a website design firm or freelancer makes proper planning on how to design and develop the assigned website. This is the stage where the designer/developer should be careful enough so that the entire processes of implementation will be systematic and the final result will be error free. This phase will have four aspects:

  • Project requirement
  • Project specification meeting
  • Project specification – visual
  • Project specification – interferences

Project Requirement

This aspect includes the preparation and submission of a written plan that includes general project overview, resource and staffing plan, milestones, and other tactical details. This step will form the basis for Project Definition Meeting.

Project Definition Meeting

Project Definition Meeting with you to determine precise details concerning the scope of the project and to develop an accurate and detailed timeline outlining the development and delivery of the project, including deliverables for the development team.

The definition will be drawn on exactly what will be included in the website and how it will be presented, on a detailed section-by-section basis. Implementation begins after this meeting.

Please Note: After the client has signed on the creative and structural definitions, any change request may affect the timeline and/or the budget of the project.

Deliverable: Information provided by you that includes relevant promotional/corporate material, research and background information etc.

Project Specification – Visuals

The designer from the team has to plan a precise visual project specification for the entire website. The same will be presented to you.

Project Specification – Interference

Developer completes specific written description of project as defined in Project Definition Meeting and approves product specification.

Changes after this date require changing in Order Form and may incur additional charges.

3. Implementation

This will be the actual phase of designing and developing your website. The workflow of the phase will be –

  • UX and UI architecture design
  • Admin panel architecture design
  • Content acqusation
  • Data conversion
  • Data integration
  • Sample development
  • Final website setup
  • Server setup

UX and UI Architecture Design

The designer will design the complete (user interface) UI and (user experience) UX architecture for the front end of the website. While UI will define how your website will be easy to use, UX will define how it will look.

Admin Panel Architecture Design

The designer will design the Admin Panel Architecture or content management system (CMS) of your website

The admin panel of your website will help you easily managing the content of the site without any technical skill.

Content Acquisition

The development team will prepare a list of required content and submit the same to you for delivery.

Data Conversion

Developer converts content into application formats.

Data Integration

Developer imports and integrates data content into website.

Developer creates unique graphics and screens (pages) for the website. Custom programming begins.

Sample Development

The developers will work to deliver the first samples. A couple of samples will be provided to you for approval. You may either approve or provide your feedback to review.

Final Website Development

The developers will work to deliver the final website. You need to provide approval for testing.

Server Setup

Developer assists set up of Web Server, domain, and options

4. Testing

Testing will be in two phases as follow:

  • Alpha testing
  • Beta Testing

Alpha Testing

Developer begins internal testing of application functionality. Bugs are systematically reported and fixed.

Beta Testing

During this step, we will validate the content and finalize live project with review by you. You will be requested to monitor the website and report any bug, media consistency and other type of issue including language errors and readability.

5. Launching and Phase-Out

Now that your website has been designed, developed and tested for errors and bug issues, the exciting moment has reached. It’s time to activate your site.

Your website goes live: We will host your website in a secure server and point your domain to the site. We will add security features to both your domain and website.

Other Error Fixing

During this period, the team will check for all language and visual related issues. You’ll be requested to provide your feedback for revision. All the errors will be corrected.

Admin Training

You will require to assign an employee to manage your website’s content. We will train your employee to handle the admin panel and manage the content.

Our support helpline will be always open for you. We will provide all the possible post-sales services along with annual maintenance as per the terms of agreement.

Project Review

After a week or two of completing your project, our research team will request you to review and rate our service. This is very crucial to us as clients’ satisfaction is the real key to success. Your feedback will be highly valuable to us.
